Todorov's Narrative Structure - (Task 2)

TODOROV'S THEORY
Todorov's theory stated that most stories or plot lines follow the same pattern/ structure.
This was divided into 5 steps.

The Equilibrium - Life is Just Right. Here the main characters life is balanced and normal. There have been no disruptions to the characters life so far.

The Disruption - A problem causes disruption. The main characters life has suddenly been disrupted, shattering their previous equilibrium.

Recognition - The main character realises. The main character now begins to realise that their situation has changed - and not for the better.

Repair - Repairing the situation begins. The main character now sets out to 'right their wrongs'. (Try to find a new equilibrium).

New Equilibrium - The character has gained a new equilibrium. The main character has worked through their problems and as a result has a new equilibrium. However, they have grown from their experience. Life is now better than it was at the beginning of the narrative. (Something has changed that wasn't the same as before at the beginning of the film/ story.)

For my example of this theory, I have used...
DOCTOR WHO: SERIES 1, EPISODE 1 - ROSE

The Equilibrium: Rose Tyler is an ordinary 19 year old girl who
lives in London with her mother. She works at a shop and lives
a plain, boring, average life.

The Disruption: Rose Tyler suddenly finds herself in a extra-terrestrial
dilema. She faces an encounter with mysterious living plastic
(The Nestene Consciousness) and her life suddenly flashes before
her. There is no escape! When suddenly, a man, The Doctor, takes her by the hand.
"Run!". They run for their lives away from danger. Life will never be the same again
for Rose Tyler.

Recognition: After a close encounter with death,  and her job being blown up,
Rose Tyler releases that theres much more out there and is curious about the mysterious man
known has The Doctor. She decides to investigate and find out more about hi. But then,
she finds him again but this time she finds herself caught up in an alien plot which
could be the end of the world. She knows life has changed but is it for the better?
Repair: Rose gets 'drawn in' to the Doctors life and wants to know what is
going on. However, during the Doctors negotiations with the 'Nestene Consciousness' ,
it all goes wrong and the Doctor is restrained and the invasion begins. It is all up to Rose,
Rose decides she doesn't want her old boring life and wants to save the world.
She saves the Doctor and the planet by swinging on the rope and kicking some 'grass'.
She proved herself to the Doctor. Rose Tyler is no-longer a teenage girl who works
at a shop, she's the girl who helped save the Earth.
The New Equilibrium: The Doctor drops rose back at her estate in London. He
asks if she would like to travel with him. "It also travels in space and time". Her face
lights up, kisses her boyfriend goodbye, and the scene closes with her running
of to the Doctors Space Ship.
Her new life begins...
Adventure.
